Feng shui can get pretty advanced, but even you and I can benefit from the ancient Chinese science around the home and in our lives. While advanced feng shui is extremely precise and mathematical, there are more basic elements that we can all use to benefit many parts of our lives.
In many ways, feng shui (pronounced foong soy or feng shway, depending entirely on your Chinese dialect) is common sense, while in others its steeped in ancient Chinese wisdom and learning. As the world’s most ancient civilisation, using the Chinese wisdoms in your cleaning and housekeeping won’t do your life any harm; in fact, it’s likely to help your home considerably.
So how can you use the more basic elements to clean your own home?
Clean your house of clutter
If you don’t love or use something regularly in your house, get rid of it. Clutter cleaning is a vital step in creating a harmonious atmosphere in your home, and the process of cleaning is tremendously therapeutic. The energy and care you put into cleaning out will give you and your house a whole new feeling of positive energy.
Use the energies
The energy of feng shui is called chi, and is in part found in good quality air and light in your home. When you declutter, throw open your windows and let natural air and light flood your home. When wide-open windows aren’t possible, invest in some air-purifying plants and an air-purifier.
Clean naturally
When you’re spring cleaning, feng shui recommends you clean not just the areas you can see, but the cupboards and fridge, stove and freezer as well. Clean every pot and pan with natural cleaners, rather than heavy-duty chemicals, which are no more effective than their natural counterparts.
Find your home’s energy
Buy a ba-gua map, they are now widely available, to work out the energy of your house. Each area of your home is connected with difference areas of your life. The south-east facing part of your home, traditionally, is associated with money energy’s flow in your life. When you know those areas, you will be able to aid the flow of positive energy through your home.
Just let go
The key to feng shui is to clean out, let go and harmonise your home. By removing clutter, removing mess and removing dirt, you will allow energy and positivity into your home, which will perk up many areas of your life.
